“As a teacher, one of my hoped for outcomes of my teaching career is that some folks who have studied with me will be able to carry on what I have begun – and thus continue the leading concentration that I have developed over my thirty years of teaching at Fuller Theological Seminary.”

“That is, I hope I will have a legacy. I would desire that some, who will have studied with me, will build on what I have started and take it further in their own unique way. With that in mind, passing on a legacy, I have written this position paper. My thesis is that any leader transitioning out of ministry can best insure a legacy by doing two things: Modeling and Sharing of Values. This position paper, in itself, is modeling. In addition, I am explicitly identifying values that will hopefully insure a legacy – if they are picked up on.

Isolation processing is an important shaping activity. 90% of the leaders Dr. Clinton has studied experience the shaping activity of isolation. Dr. Clinton begins this paper by defining and describing isolation. What is isolation?

Isolation processing refers to the setting aside of a leader from normal ministry or leadership involvement due to involuntary causes, partially self-caused or voluntary causes for a period of time sufficient enough to cause and/or allow serious evaluation of life and ministry. Isolation can be categorized into three major types: Type I. Negative Sovereign Intervention; Type II. Negative Opposition; Type III. Positive Self-Choice.

Dr. Clinton next suggests some results of isolation processing and gives some common happenings – of all three types. And then comes the heart of the paper. Dr. Clinton describes four Biblical leaders (Job, Moses, Elijah and Paul) who went through isolation. He points out their responses to it and the lessons learned. A proper response to this shaping activity will see a leader examine what God is longing to teach him/her and proactively respond to God’s shaping.

As a teacher, one of Dr. Clinton’s hoped for outcomes of teaching, is that students will continue to use things they have learned in his class long after the class. Over the years, Dr. Clinton has discovered perspectives that shed light about this.

Things the teacher does, while teaching a student, can greatly affect whether or not the student is motivated to continue using what has been initially learned. This paper integrates some of those things Dr. Clinton has discovered about the ongoing use of things learned. He also illustrates actual applications of what he has done in the classroom because of those perspectives.

This is a collection of individual items about the teaching gift. These were developed for the most part in the last 15 years of Dr. Clinton’s teaching career. He has used all these items at one time or another to help folks with a teaching gift. He has done an eight-unit course on developing one’s teaching gift – which he required all of his doctoral students to go through.

He has also mentored individuals using these materials.  Dr. Clinton lists these items in the order that he usually has a person with a teaching gift read them. The essence of the components making up a class designed for seminar involves three folders containing files or other folders. These three folders include: 1. Reading material containing the kind of subject matter material that comprises the course concepts;

2. Varied overview design materials (preliminary materials) like course descriptions and related items. These files focus the layout of the course and coordinate its delivery; 3. Actual detailed inputs that are given in the classroom week by week.

This paper gives a tree diagram (Figure 1), which lists under the three essential components all the basic items that Dr. Clinton has learned to design and use. This material has been excerpted from previous writings on parables to help emerging leaders who want to pursue the study of core parables. The parables communicate much foundational Christian truth.

Most people will have one or more core parables simply because they have heard teaching on some parable and have been moved by God to understand and apply its lesson. But all leaders can profit from a deliberate intentional selection of some core parables.

This position paper recognizes that leaders will never have enough personal experiences to learn all they need to know to lead effectively as God would have them do. It suggests vicarious learning as a means for developing beyond one’s personal experience alone.

The Leadership Mandate of Hebrews 13:7-8, gives a firm Biblical rationale for vicarious learning. The paper gives help on learning vicariously from 3 sources: Biblical leaders; historical leaders; contemporary leaders.

Dr. Clinton has done 16 Biblical leadership commentaries (several are co-authored). This position paper suggest 3 methodologies for studying these commentaries including: using them in one’s personal devotional time; using them in peer mentoring situations; using them with small cluster groups.

This is an in-depth write up of Dr. Clinton’s hermeneutical system. The breakthrough concepts of left-brain and right-brain organized structures are applied to the 66 books of the Bible. Lots of illustrations of Clinton’s hermeneutical guidelines are given along with study guides.

Three journaling definitions are given. These were educed from Dr. Clinton’s own many practical journaling exercises: reflective journaling; 9 kinds of reflective journaling; 5 uses of reflective journaling.

In this position paper the Sells’ Guidance diagram is given and explained along with 7 underlying guidance principles. Guidance process items from leadership emergence theory are also given.

The concept of an explicit leadership value is given along with lots of examples written out. Two notions of end game ministry are identified – Afterglow ministry and Consolidation.

Two important features of Afterglow ministry (the very heart of consolidation) include: 1.) Modeling; 2.) Sharing of Values. This paper is focusing on sharing of values. Endgamers are encouraged to know and pass on their values as one of the means of consolidating their ministries.

This position paper captures a three-part lecture series delivered at the 1996 Spring Lectures on Leadership at Lincoln Christian Seminary in Illinois. Lecture 1 deals with finishing well, the goal of a focused life. Lecture 2 overviews the focused life. Lecture 3 concentrates on the focal elements of the focused life, the most important being life purpose.

This position paper gives the essential nature of a ministry philosophy – a set of values that under gird a leader. A growing understanding of the scriptures, of self, and leadership situations contribute to this dynamic nature of ministry philosophy. This paper gives the results of a comparative study of leaders in the Bible – mostly Old Testament leaders. Four observations resulted: 1. Few leaders finish well; 2. Leadership is difficult; 3. God’s enabling presence is the essential ingredient of successful leadership; 4. Spiritual leadership can make a difference.

These four observations form the basis for discussion, which in fact turns these observations into challenges for leadership today.

This little manual is worth its weight in gold. Almost every leader at one time or another will face being set aside from ministry—the basic notion of isolation. This booklet shows what leaders face when set aside from ministry for various reasons like sickness, persecution, discipline, crises, self-choice, etc.

The manual gives patterns and proper attitudes to face these experiences as leaders develop toward maturity in their leadership. Isolation is one of the deep processing items which all leaders should life schedule for. This manual has been a top seller and has been used as a very important supplemental text in courses dealing with life long development. It describes what is probably the most common deep processing a leader faces.

Dr. Trebesh is a missionary training and developing leaders in several Asian countries. She did her doctoral study with Dr. Clinton.

Change happens. It can be deliberate. Most of the time it is not. This resource (pdf file) helps leaders bring about change by virtue of their giftedness, role, and vision. Particularly is this true of leaders in power roles—senior pastors and organizational heads (p. 381 pages).

For those with position power there is usually not a deliberate calculation of change being implemented nor is there any anticipation of ramifications other than the direct implementation of whatever the power leader is wanting. But it is different for those not in power roles to bring about change. Usually it must be deliberate and well thought out if anything is to happen. In either case, power roles or not, Change could be more effective and less traumatic if those involved in them knew more about change dynamics—the principles, processes, people/roles involved, timing and patterns which accompany change. This manual intends to expose some of those dynamics so that leaders can be more deliberate in assessing the change they introduce.

Focused Lives is a comparative bibliographic study and resource of eight effective Christian leaders who finished well. From this comparative study a definition for a focused life was derived (527, p. pdf file).

A focused life is a life dedicated to exclusively carrying out God’s effective purposes through it, by identifying the focal issues, that is, the life purpose, effective methodology, major role, or ultimate contribution which allows an increasing prioritization of life’s activities around the focal issues, and results in a satisfying life of being and doing. Comparative study as to how each of the eight discovered life purpose, effective methodologies, major role and ultimate contributions yields invaluable information/ lessons for a leader who wishes to see how God strategically guides a leader to become and achieve what God intended.
